Overview

Algeria is situated on the north coast of Africa with a total area of almost 2.4 million sq.km and a population of 26 million. The narrow fertile coastal strip supports most of the population. Farther south, the Atlas Mountains run east-west. Farther south again, are sparsely populated grassland plains. Farther south again the land is arid and largely uninhabited but contains Algeria's highest mountain, Mt. Tahat.

85% of land is Saharan desert.The climate of Algeria is mediteranean in the north with cool rainy winters and hot dry summers [average temperature in January 12C,whilst in July 25C); typical tropical desert climate in the south with little rainfall.
