Overview

Lesotho is a south African kingdom completely surrounded by South Africa and is land-locked, covering an area of 30,000 sq. kms. Approx two thirds of the land is mountainous. The highlands are dissected by numerous valleys and gorges. In the west is a fertile strip of land which supports the bulk of the population.

The climate is subtropical and temperate, with mild, dry winters and warm summers (October to April). In winter, particularly in January, frosts are common in the west lowlands and snowfalls occur at higher altitudes.
