Overview

The Maldives are located in the northern Indian Ocean, southwest of the southern tip of India. They consist of a chain of nearly 2,000 small coral islands grouped in clusters of atolls. They are low lying with a small amount of tropical vegetation. The total area of the Maldives is 298 sq. kms and is the smallest Asian country by both population and land area.

The climate is tropical and humid and rains fall from May to November. The monsoonal influence is more strongly felt in the north of the Maldives than the south.
