Scotland covers the northern third of Great Britain and is a part of the United Kingdom. Scotland shares a border with England to the south. It is otherwise surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. The total area of Scotland is 78,772 sq. km. Scotland's highest point is the summit of Ben Nevis, at 1,334 metres above seas level, while the River Tay is Scotland's longest river, flowing for a distance of 190 kilometres.

Scotland’s climate is temperate and oceanic, with cooler temperates on average than the rest of the United Kingdom. Average winter temperatures are 6°C in the Lowlands, with summer temperatures averaging 18°C.
