Overview

Turkmenistan is a former member of the Soviet Socialist Republic. It is located in Central Asia and covers over 488,000 sq kms. Deserts and flat plains occupy 90% of the land, including Kara-Kum, one of the world’s largest sand deserts. It shares boreders with uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, Iran and the Caspian Sea.

The climate is extremes of hot and cold. Because of the desert land, temperaturtes vary widely. In summer, 50°C (July) is not uncommon and in winter (January) minus 33°C. Rainfall throughout the country is low.
