Travelling to another culture can be a wonderfully enriching experience. It is important, however, to be aware of the impact your travels may have on the local people and environments you are visiting. Travel Doctor-TMVC offers the following advice for responsible tourism.

Cultural Understanding

  • Travel with an open mind.
  • Plan before you go. Learn about the country you are visiting and how to be a good guest in their culture.

Social Impacts

  • Support the local economy by using locally run restaurants and hotels. Buy products made by locals from renewable resources.
  • Interact with locals in a culturally appropriate manner.
  • Get permission before photographing people, homes, or sites of importance.
  • Do not make promises you will not keep (photos, assistance, etc.).
  • Do not make extravagant displays of wealth.
  • Do not encourage children to beg.

Environmental Impacts

  • Travel in small, low impact groups.
  • Leave only your footprints. Ensure proper disposal of human waste.
  • Become aware of, and contribute to, projects benefiting local environments and communities.
  • Do not buy products made from endangered species or plants.
